Karl Hinds, Area Manager at Chevron Systems, Rochdale has been offering a traffic management awareness course as part of our ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the safety critical nature of traffic management.
The course lasts for approximately 1hr 30 mins and contains basic yet valuable information on the following:
- Sector Schemes
- Health and safety at work
- Safety zones
- Chapter 8 (2009) of the Traffic Signs Manual
- Traffic management operation (Vehicles, Communication, Equipment, Installation, maintenance and removal)
- Accident and emergencies
- HA video ‘Respect our Road Workers’
The course itself is constantly evolving and updated in line with the changing needs and innovations of our industry and can be tailored to suit any specific audience.
Karl says, “I started running the courses to show contractors, designers and anybody else on sites what our guys have to do in order to install traffic management. The procedures, protocols, dangers and challenges which they face in order to implement a closure to provide that ‘safe environment’ for them to work in”.
So far the course has been delivered to well over 300 people with 215 of those based in Area 12 at the M62 Managed Motorways scheme. Other locations include Area 3 with Enterprise Mouchel , Area 10 and also Area 9 at the M5 & M42 with the added attendance of Warwickshire police.
Bob Tootell, Health and Safety Manager at Bam Morgansindall Joint Venture said “The sessions provided useful feedback, recognising many good practices being observed by members of the site team in construction areas behind TM, but also as a timely reminder of the hazards present and in the need for everyone to remain focused on the ‘safety basics’ at all times. Our thanks to Karl for his time and for sharing his passion for the safety of road workers, a passion that is shared by many!” .
The course has proved very successful so far with positive feedback such as:
